October 21st - 27th 2007 at Rheged, Penrith, Cumbria

The Himalaya, or the “Abode of Snow”, is often referred to as “The Roof of the World” for good reason. This planet’s most spectacular mountain range, it rises up to 6 miles in height and stretches for over 1500 miles. It is both a landscape that defies imagination and the crucible to some of the world’s most exciting cultures, philosophies and religions. To western explorers, mountaineers and travellers it was, and still remains a place of mystery - a landscape to be explored. To the people who live there, it is simply home; to the people in the plains below, the source of life – of water.

School and College Students will find the contents of the festival a useful addition in areas of geology, geography, environment, climate change and comparative religions. As this is half term week, many of the presentations are orientated towards engaging with a younger audience.

Buddhist Himalaya is a unique annual festival that brings together and celebrates the exciting elements that makes the Himalayan geography and culture so fascinating. For seven days, Buddhist Himalaya comes to the Rheged Centre – at the edge of lakes and mountains of the English Lake District – to tell just part of the story of the land and people of the “Roof of the World”.

Community Action Nepal and Rokpa UK organise the festival; in this they are supported by some of the world’s leading experts, on Buddhism and the Himalaya. Buddhist Himalaya is an awareness / fundraising project to support and protect the indigenous cultures of the Himalayan region through the work of Community Action Nepal and Rokpa.
