Mike Searle

The Geology of the Himalaya, Karakoram and Tibet

Born in Singapore, Mike spent much of his boyhood in Malaya and Indonesia and later in Oman, where his father worked for Shell.

He began rock climbing in Wales and Scotland and soon after joined mountaineering expeditions first to Patagonia and later to the Himalaya. He managed to combine his love of the mountains with his profession as an academic geologist specialising in the building of the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau. Since 1984 he spent several months every year on geological - mountaineering expeditions to the Indian, Nepal, Sikkim and Bhutan Himalaya as well as throughout the Pakistan Karakoram and Hindu Kush.

He is a Lecturer in the Earth Sciences Department at Oxford University.
